A child takes a dog for a walk in the country. The dog starts to bark. There is a ssssssssss sound and a snake slithers away.
3) Tt:
Children imitate watching tennis, turning head from side to side and saying tttt. e,g. tennis, teddy, top, hit, cat.
4) Pp:
Hold up index finger, as if it is a lit candle, and image puffing it out, saying p. e,g. pig, puff, pant, spot, top.
5) Nn:
Hold out arms as if an aeroplane nose diving, and say nnnnn. E.g. noise, nosedive, nasty, snap, man.
6) Cc / Kk:
Raise hands and snap fingers together as if playing castanets, and say kkk. E.g. cat, clog, tractor, clock, king, kite, skip.
7) Hh:
Act as panting after a race, holding hand up to mouth, and saying h, h, h, e.g. hop, hot, huff, house, hill.
8) Rr: Pretend to be a puppy pulling a rag, with teeth clenched and shaking head, saying rrrrr, e. g. rag, rabbit, forest, carrot.
9) Mm:
Rub tummy, seeing tasty food, and say mmmmm, e. g. meal, menu, man, summer, swim.
10) Dd:
Pretend to hold drum sticks and beat up and down on a drum and say dddd, e. g. drum, band, dog, sad, pad.
11) Gg:
Spiral hand down as if water gurgling down a plug hole, and say g, g, g, gurgle, e.g. glug, gurgle, goose, girl, leg.
12) Ll:
Pretend to lick a lolly, saying lllll, e.g. lolly, lick, lemon, spell, slug.
13) Ff:
Place one hand above as if inflatable fish is deflating, and say fffffffff, e.g. fish, flat, fun, soft, sniff.
14) Bb:
Place hands together as if batting a ball, and say b, b, b, e.g. bat, ball, belt, tubby, crab.
15) Jj:
Pretend to be a jelly, and wobble, saying j, j, j, jelly, e.g. jelly jump, jet, jug, jam.
16) Zz:
Pretend to be a bee, with elbows in, and hands flapping, saying zzzzzzzzzzzzzz, e.g. zebra, buzz, zoo, zip, fizzy.
17) Ww:
Blow onto open hand like the wind, repeating wh, wh, wh, e.g. wind, wet, west, windmill, swift.
18) Vv:
Pretend to be driving along in a van, saying vvvvvv, e.g. van, vest, vet, very, driver.
19) Yy:
Pretend to eat yogurt from a spoon, saying y, y, yogurt, with each spoonful, e.g. yogurt, yellow, yo-yo, yes, yard.
20) Xx:
Pretend to take an x-ray with an x-ray camera, saying ks, ks, ks, e.g. x-ray, fox, six, box, mix.
22) Ii:
Pretend to be a mouse, by wiggling fingers on end of your nose (whiskers), and squeak iii, e.g. ink, Indian, imp, pin, sit.
22) Ee: (short e)
Pretend to hold egg with one hand, as if cracking it against the side of a bowl or pan. Use both hands to open shell, saying eh, eh, eh, e.g. egg, empty, end, shed, tent.
23) Oo:
Imagine turning switch on and off, and say o, o; o, o; on, off, e.g. on, off, octopus, ostrich, pond, shop.
24) Uu:
Keep one hand steady and if raising an umbrella, and say u...u...u...up, e.g. up, umbrella under, sun, jump.
25) ou (the 'ou' sound ):
Pretend your finger is a needle, and prick thumb, saying ow! E.g. ouch! Out, loud, cloud, sound.
26) oi (the 'oi' sound ):
Cup hands around mouth as if hailing a passing boat, saying oi! Ship ahoy! E.g. oil, coin, point, boil, join.
27) ue (long u):
Point to different people around you, and say you...you...you, e.g. argue, cue, rescue, barbecue, statue.
28) er (the 'er' sound ):
Roll hands over and over each other, and say er, er (as in the or her), e.g. mixer, term, her, sister, dinner.
29) ar (the 'er' sound ):
Open mouth wide and say ah, e.g. arm, car, park, dark, star.
30) ai (long a):
Cup hand over ear, as if hard of hearing, and say ay? E.g. aim, snail, rain, pain, train.
31) oa (long a):
Bring hand up to mouth as if seeing something go wrong, and say oh! E.g. oak, goat, coat, soak, toast.
32) ie (long I):
Stand to attention and salute, saying aye aye, e.g. tie, pie. die, lie.
33) ee /or (long e and the 'or' sound ):
Pretend to be a donkey braying, and saying eeyore, eeyore, e,g. bee, see, sheep, feet, tree, fork, short, torch, corn, storm.
34) oo:
Imagine being the cuckoo in a cuckoo clock, jutting head forward and back saying the call of the cuckoo: u, oo; u, oo, e.g. cook, book, look, hook, took, coo, moon, soon, shoot, tooth.
35) ng:
Pretend to be a weightlifter, bringing arms above head, and say ng ... e.g. strong, ring, song, string, bang.
36) qu:
Make a duck's beak with hinged hands, and say qu, qu, qu, quack, e.g. quack, queen, quick, quiet, squirrel.
37) ch:
Pretend to be a steam train, moving the arms like piston rods, saying ch... ch... ch... e.g. choo-choo, chick, church, chop, chips.
38) sh:
Place index finger over lips, and say sh. e.g. ship, shell, shout, dish, crash.
39) th:
Child pretends to be a little rude by sticking out tongue a little and saying th (as in them), and very rude by sticking tongue further out and saying th (as in thumb), e.g. that, then, this, feather, with thin, thumb, thick, thunder, month.
