An Investigation on Mental Health of
Children in Special Families

Abstract526 children in special families and 510 childrenin ordinary familiesare tested by using the self-made Mental Health Checklist for elementary and mi ddle school students. The results indicate that the self-concept of children inspecial families is the worst followed by learning and cognitive problems, and c haracter disfigurement and emotional problems rank the third. Results also revea l that children in special families are significantly lower than children in ord inary families in 'learning and cognition', 'interpersonal adaptation', 'behavio ral problem', 'emotional problem', 'character disfigurement', 'self-concept' andgeneral mental health. Mental health of children in different types of specialfamilies is compared and the results reveal that the level of mental health of c hildren in separation families is the lowest followed by that of children in mig rant families, and that of children in divorced families, spouse-loss families a nd remarried families ranks the third, and the highest is that of children in pa rent-absent families. Furthermore, in special families, results also show that t he problems of learning and cognition of junior high school students are signifi c antly more than those of elementary school students. And the problems of self-co ncept of female elementary school students are remarkably more than those of mal e elementary school students. And the problems of interpersonal adaptation, beha vior, and the general mental health of male junior high school students are obse rvably more than those of female junior high school students.
