有位青年画家想努力提高自己的画技，画出人人喜爱的画。为此，他想出了一个办法。
他把自己认为最满意的一幅作品的复制品拿到市场上，旁边放上一枝笔，请观众们把不足之处指点出来。
集市上人来人往，画家的态度又十分诚恳，许多人就真诚地发表自己的意见。到晚上回来，画家发现，画面上所有的地方都标上了指责的记号。也就是说，这幅画简直一无是处。
这个结果对年轻人的打击太大了，他萎靡不振，开始怀疑自己到底有没有绘画的才能。他的老师见他前不久还雄心万丈，此时情绪却如此消沉，不明就里，待问清原委后哈哈大笑，告诉他不必就此下结论，换一个方法再试试看。
第二天，画家把同一幅画的又一个复制品拿到集市上，旁边放上了一枝笔。所不同的是，这次是让大家把觉得精彩的地方指出来。到晚上回来，画面上所有地方同样密密麻麻地写满了各种记号。
青年画家于是大彻大悟，以后在画坛上终有成就。
