Dear Mom, thank you for bringing me into this world.

A Daughter's Love for Her Mother

The daughter's name is Anna Jarvis. She was very close to her mother1. Anna missed her mother greatly after her mother died in May 1905.
In 1907, she persuaded her mother's church in West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the 2nd Sunday of May, which was the anniversary2of her mother's death. At the same time, Anna began a campaign to set up3a national Mother's Day throughout the United States. Together with her friends, Anna began to write letters to influential4people and top-level government officials to get their support.
Her efforts finally paid off 5. Many states in America began to celebrate Mother's Day. In 1914, the United States' President made an official announcement 6proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.
While many countries celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times, there are some countries such as China, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Australia and Belgium that also celebrate Mother's Day on the 2nd Sunday of May.

  Red Carnations for Mother

It was Anna who started the tradition of giving carnations 7on Mother's Day. The white carnation was her mother's favorite flower.
Since then, the carnation was chosen to represent 8 the sweetness, purity and endurance9 of a mother's love. On Mother's Day, people give red carnations as a symbol of love for their mothers10.

  Celebrating Mother's Day

Nowadays, children honor their mothers with cards, gifts and flowers11. They also give their mothers a day off12 to rest, which means:
——No cooking: Family will go out to eat at their mother's favorite restaurant.
——No cleaning: Children will help to do the house chores for their mothers.
——No nagging13: Children will be obedient14. They will also do their chores and homework without being asked.
Some children write beautiful poems for their mothers. Others simply give their mothers a big hug and kiss to say “THANK YOU MUM. I LOVE YOU”.
