独特的谋篇布局

《最蓝的眼睛》以四季更替为故事发展的时间主线，以小女孩佩科拉的遭遇为切入点，以解构西方人观念中的理想家庭模式为核心，在有限的篇幅中把这种理想的虚伪性揭露得淋漓尽致。
小说的引子部分向读者展示了西方人观念中的理想家庭模式：父亲、母亲、儿子、女儿、宠物，生活在宽敞宜人的漂亮房子里。引子中的描述性文字重复了三遍：先是格式规范的语句和段落，标点、行距、大小写都按常规编排；第二遍出现时，这段文字没有标点，除了第一个句子第一个单词的首字母大写外，其余句子的首字母均没大写，人名及称呼也不再大写，但字与字之间还是正常隔开，清晰可辨；到了第三遍，这段文字就以意识流的语言形式出现了，没有标点，首字母也没用大写，整段文字就是一片混沌。英语原版文字如下：
Here is the house. It is green and white. It has a red door. It is very pretty. Here is the family. Mother, Father, Dick, and Jane live in the greenandwhite house. They are very happy. See Jane. She has a red dress. She wants to play. Who will play with Jane? See the cat. It goes meowmeow. Come and play. Come play with Jane. The kitten will not play. See Mother. Mother is very nice. Mother, will you play with Jane? Mother laughs. Laugh, Mother, laugh. See Father. He is big and strong. Father, will you play with Jane? Father is smiling. Smile, Father, smile. See the dog. （笔者自译：就是这幢房子，绿白相间，门是红色的，非常漂亮；在这幢房子里，住着这么一个家庭：母亲、父亲、狄克、简，他们生活得非常幸福。看见简了，她穿着红衣服；她想玩；谁愿跟她一起玩呢？看见那只猫了，它喵喵地叫着；来玩吧，来跟简一起玩，猫不愿玩。看见母亲了，母亲很和蔼；妈妈，您愿意跟简一起玩吗？妈妈笑了；笑吧，妈妈，笑吧；看见父亲了吗？他高大魁梧。爸爸，你愿意跟简一起玩吗？爸爸微笑着；笑吧，父亲，笑吧；看见那条狗吗？它汪汪地叫着；你想跟简一起玩吗？看见狗跑了，跑吧，狗狗，跑吧；看，看吧！来了一位朋友；朋友愿意和简一起玩，他们会玩得很好；玩吧，简，玩吧。）
莫里森把这个引子切成七个次引子，作为各个部分的导入，使全书结构紧凑，浑为一体，从而颠覆了西方人观念中的理想家庭模式。
第一个次引子由前四句话组成，而且第四句“it is very pretty” 重复了一遍，“Pretty”这个字单独重复了两次，或者说两次半，因为第三遍的首字母P出来后就截止了：
